Clos Liebau: History, Heritage and Renaissance in Natural Wines in the Heart of Alsace

Domaine Clos Liebau is more than just a winery; it is the fruit of a long family tradition rooted in the Alsatian terroir. Our history, marked by evolution and commitment, leads us today towards a more respectful and authentic viticulture: that of natural wines.

The Foundations: From the Garden to the Family Vineyard

The story of Clos Liebau truly begins at the start of the 20th century with Charles Schwach. At that time, the activity was diversified: a company dedicated to the production of flowers and vegetables, complemented by a small initial vineyard of one hectare.

Over generations, the focus gradually shifted to the vineyards. The family skillfully developed this heritage, reaching its zenith by managing up to 10 hectares of vines, including the prestigious Grand Cru Kirchberg plot in Ribeauvillé. This long-term commitment laid the foundations for the excellence and expertise that still characterize the estate today.

2017: The Birth of Clos Liebau and the Nature Turning Point

After a period in which winemaking had been paused, in 2017 Charles' great-grandson, Sébastien, gave a decisive new impetus to the family legacy.

Taking over the lease of the remaining 3.2 hectares of vines, Sébastien decided to revive the winemaking activity, abandoned fifteen years earlier. But above all, he immediately committed Domaine Clos Liebau to a major and ethical turning point: conversion to organic farming.

Natural and Ethical Wines: The Estate's Commitment

Beyond obtaining organic certification, Sébastien firmly steers the estate's philosophy towards the production of ethical and ecological wines. Our commitment goes beyond simple certification: we are moving towards the creation of natural wines.

This choice reflects our desire to minimize intervention in the cellar and vineyard, allowing the terroir to fully express itself. Clos Liebau is thus part of a process of total respect for the environment, guaranteeing vibrant, authentic, and highly drinkable Alsatian wines.
